Your hair is one of your most noticeable assets. And taking care of it can be hard work. It’s important to find hair care products that will keep your hair shiny, healthy, and as glamorous on the outside as you are on the inside.
But the options when it comes to hair care can be overwhelming.
When you pick up a new bottle of shampoo, it’s easy to feel bombarded with terms like “paraben-free,” “sulfate-free,” and “color-safe.” Turn over the package to check what’s in it and it just looks like a bunch of random ingredients and gobbledygook, right?
Fear not. We’re here to help you out.
Let’s stop and decode all this haircare gibberish. We want to educate you on what these terms mean . . . and what you should look for when choosing your hair care.
Cruelty-free means that companies agree not to perform testing of their products and ingredients on animals at any point during manufacturing.
For years, beauty companies relied on animal testing to study how their products work. Today many companies and consumers have started to take a stand and say, “No more pain for animals so we can look beautiful!”
Sometimes people think that cruelty-free products are naturally vegan, but that is not always the case.
For a product to be considered vegan, it must not contain any animal products or their byproducts at all. Think of ingredients like gelatin, honey, beeswax, and collagen, among others. Those are not vegan.
Parabens are synthetic preservatives used to extend shelf life and prevent bacteria and fungi from building up in personal care products.
Sounds like a good thing, right? Turns out, more and more studies have shown that parabens are toxic, potentially cancer-causing chemicals. This is the stuff you’re rubbing into your scalp every day!
Responsible beauty companies are ditching parabens and looking for alternatives like the natural preservative citric acid.
Sulfates are detergents that are super common in shampoo, face wash, and toothpaste. Usually, you’ll see them listed on your products as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Companies love sulfates because they are responsible for that luscious sudsy foam we associate with getting clean.
Why skip them? Because sulfates are actually powerful chemicals. Household cleaners are loaded with sulfates to cut through grease for a deep clean. But when you use such strong stuff on your hair, it strips it of its natural oils and the proteins that keep your hair and scalp healthy.
Gluten-free is a buzzword that has become increasingly popular in the last few years as more evidence shows up that it can really mess with our digestive system.
Gluten is a protein that comes from wheat, barley, and rye. It’s often included in hair care because protein is important to keep your hair and scalp healthy. I know what you’re thinking . . . I’m not going to eat my haircare products, so why does it matter if they contain wheat or not?!
If you’re one of the roughly one in 100 people who suffer from Celiac disease or gluten intolerance, it may matter a lot. While gluten is unlikely to travel through your skin into your bloodstream, there is still a risk one may have a negative reaction such as irritation, rash, or dryness.
Shampoo and other hair care products can contain harsh chemicals that cause your color-treated hair to fade fast. Look for color-safe hair products that are gentler on your hair because they are free from sulfates and other chemicals.
Color-safe products also have extra conditioning ingredients to help keep your hair shiny, soft, and healthy.
Dry, frizzy hair and split ends are likely signs of damaged hair cuticles. Hair dye, heat styling, and bleach are a few of the ways this protective outer layer can get harmed or raised up.
Cuticle-sealing hair products contain oils and proteins that moisturize and strengthen your hair as they smooth out the cuticle.
Just like it’s important to protect your skin from damaging sun rays, it’s important to protect your hair as well. Excessive sun exposure can dry out and weaken your hair, causing it to feel rough and brittle. Sun can also breakdown the pigmentation and cause your color to fade.
Look for hair products that offer UVA and UVB filters to help protect your hair from the sun’s harsh rays. Our Fab.ME Leave-In Treatment is your one-stop-shop for protection from sun damage and outside irritants. Finish up with extra protection from our uniqueHold.ME Three-Way Hairspray.
